History

The Moulins de Vontes are located on the river Indre, a 265 km tributary of the river Loire. Thanks to its numerous islands and steep rocky banks, the river offered a favourable environment to build mills as early as the 10th century AD. Before the French Revolution, there were mills every 1.5 km !

Their actual architecture goes back to the 18th century

In 1791, the Moulins de Vontes were sold to a René Vincendeau le Jeune. He applied for an additional wheel to the southern building known as the Moulin du Midi, which he finally obtained in 1804.

In 1914, the Moulin du Midi ceased its operation. It was soon followed in 1964 by both the other mills.

On July 26th 1991, Odile and JJ Degail, the present owners, bought the Moulins de Vontes from Monsieur Hugues Capdepon de Bigu Poirrier.

In June 2000, the Degails opened their 3 room Bed & Breakfast in the northern building known as the Moulin du Nord. The Lieutenants Room, the Oriental Room and the Priory Room.
